It may not seem like it but there’s a lot of variety in the typical French toast, including this version the deep fried Portuguese style, very traditional for Christmas, in this case how about instead of the more common sugar and cinnamon sprinkle, how about serving French toast with an orange syrup, it’s super simple and like me you don’t need to serve them all with the syrup, I made half with sugar and cinnamon and the other half with this delicious orange syrup.

Yes, there’s nothing like a 2-in-1, you always get more variety than a huge pile of french toast with the same flavor. The recipe for the portuguese french toast is very similar to the typical one, only at the end, instead of covering them with sugar and cinnamon, the french toast are soaked in the orange syrup, so let’s get to the recipe.

Delight in the sweet indulgence of Portuguese Deep Fried French Toast, or Rabanadas de Laranja, featuring a luscious orange syrup that adds a zesty twist, a quite delectable Christmas treat.

Ingredients

  • Bread – 1 thick baguette
  • Eggs – 4 L
  • Milk – 1 liter (Whole)
  • Lemon – 2 peels
  • Cinnamon – 1 stick
  • Vegetable Oil – For frying
  • Salt – A pinch
  • Orange – 2 (zest and juice)
  • Cinnamon – 1 stick
  • Sugar – 250gr
  • Water – 50ml

Directions

  1. For the Portuguese style French toast, slice the bread diagonally two fingers thick to create a beautiful French toast. Let the bread dry for a couple of days so that the French toast is tastier.
  2. When it’s time to make the French toast, bring the milk to the boil with 2 lemon (or orange heheh) peels and 1 cinnamon stick, let the milk heat up well but avoid boiling.
  3. Heat the oil in a large, deep frying pan.
  4. Then prepare a wide, deep dish with the beaten eggs with a pinch of salt and another with the very hot milk.
  5. Pass the bread through the milk, let it soak in well (if you’re in doubt, squeeze the bread a little, if it feels hard in the middle then it needs to soak in a little more), then pass the bread through the egg and fry, repeat until you have no bread left.
  6. Once the bread is fried, put it on absorbent paper to drain off the excess oil.
  7. 7.Then prepare the syrup: in a pyrex or small saucepan add the juice and zest of 2 oranges, the water, 1 cinnamon stick and 250 grams of sugar, cook until the sugar dissolves and the syrup thickens a little.
  8. You can also serve the toast dry with the syrup on the side, but they’re much better if they’ve been soaking in the syrup for a few hours. Enjoy and Merry Christmas.
Notes: Here are some portuguese deep fried french toast tips… hummm use very stale bread, buy and cut it like a few days before making this, allow the bread to soak very well, better to soak well and drain a bit than fried on the outside and dry on the inside, if you are making a bit batch, you can do like i did, half plain just sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon and half with the orange syrup.
