Whoa, today we have the perfect recipe for Summer! (Altought its already October, why is it sooo hot, this el niño is really something) So how about a super simple and delicious dish? Basically, you grill a nice big chunk of beef (mine was top sirloin, but any good cut that’s great for grilling will turn out delicious), bake some mixed potatoes and whip up a little tomato salad. It’s no work at all!
The potatoes are my favorite part. I like to mix regular potatoes with sweet potatoes, cut them into sticks and let the oven do its thing until they’re tender inside and nice and crispy outside. A little olive oil, a pinch of thyme, sweet paprika, salt and pepper, and that’s all the seasoning they need to steal the show.
Then comes the steak, seasoned with just salt and pepper (yes, that’s really it!), grilled until it gets those beautiful marks on the outside, medium-rare and rested a few minutes so the meat is extra tender. Add a fresh, thin-sliced tomato and onion salad with a drizzle of balsamic vinegar and you have a complete dinner on the table. So, let’s get to the recipe!
Juicy Grilled Sirloin Steak with Oven-Baked Potato and Sweet Potato Fries

Yeah I know, this is a simple recipe, and I know most people don't need instructions for something like this. But sometimes it's nice to share a recipe like this, because it's half recommendation, half an excellent beginner recipe to start trying at home. Grilling meat, roasting potatoes and tossing together a salad are the building blocks of so much good cooking, and once you get comfortable with them, you can take them anywhere!
Ingredients
- Beef – 500g (2 Steaks, Sirloin)
- Potatoes – 4
- Sweet Potatoes – 2
- Tomato – 1
- Onion – 1
- Olive Oil – A drizzle
- Balsamic Vinegar – A drizzle
- Oregano – A pinch
- Thyme – A pinch
- Sweet Paprika – A pinch
- Pepper – A pinch
- Salt – A pinch
Directions
- I used frozen sweet potatoes, but generally, if you are using fresh sweet potatoes, it is best to add them to the oven after the first 20 minutes, as they cook faster than regular potatoes.
- Peel the potatoes and cut them into wedges. Arrange both the regular and sweet potatoes on a baking sheet, drizzle with a little olive oil, and season with a pinch of thyme, sweet paprika, pepper, and salt. Roast in an oven preheated to about 180ºC (356ºF) for around 40 minutes, until the potatoes are tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.
- For the steak, take it out of the fridge about 30 minutes before cooking and season with salt and pepper.
- After that time, heat up a grill pan and cook the steak until it has nice grill marks on the outside. Aim for rare or medium-rare so the meat stays juicy, remove from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing.
- Finally, prepare the salad, thinly slice the tomato and onion, and dress with a drizzle of olive oil, balsamic vinegar, and a pinch of oregano, salt, and pepper. And that’s it, just serve everything. Bon appétit!

Take the steak out of the fridge about 30 minutes before grilling, so it cooks more evenly.
Pat the steak dry with paper towels before seasoning. A dry surface gives you a better sear and those nice grill marks.
Get the grill (or pan) properly hot before the steak goes on, and try not to move it around. Let it sit and build a crust.
When the steak has rested, slice it against the grain for a more tender bite.
Cut the potatoes and sweet potatoes to a similar size so they cook evenly, and don’t crowd the tray. If they’re piled on top of each other they’ll steam instead of getting crispy, so use two trays if needed.
Flip the potatoes once or twice while they bake for an even golden color.
No grill? A very hot cast iron skillet works great for the steak.
Salt the tomato and onion salad right before serving, so the tomatoes don’t get watery.
