Classic portugues recipe of boiled hake, i know it looks basic, but it's delicious nevertheless.

Ingredients

  • Hake – 4 fillets
  • Potatoes – 4
  • Carrots – 4
  • Eggs – 4
  • Cabbage – 1/2
  • Olive Oil – To taste
  • Pepper – A pinch
  • Salt – A pinch

Directions

  1. You can do everything in one pot, but it’s best to cook the eggs separately, as they take less time, so add the eggs to a small pan of cold water, bring to the boil, turn down to a simmer and cook for about 8 minutes until they’re cooked through, then drain into very cold water or water with ice, let it sit a bit and finally peel.
  2. In a pan of cold water add the peeled potatoes, peeled carrots, cabbage and hake fillets, season with a pinch of coarse salt.
  3. When the water comes to the boil, turn the heat down a little and cook over a medium-low heat.
  4. When about 10 minutes have passed, remove the fish and cabbage, and check the carrots – if they’re tender, remove them too, if not, leave them.
  5. When about 20 minutes have passed, the potatoes should be ready, chop them if you don’t feel any resistance, they’re already tender, remove everything from the water.
  6. Serve with plenty of olive oil and a pinch of chilli if you want it spicy, enjoy.
Notes: Like i said you can use any kind of sauce to pair with the dish, i really like a garlic mayo, a curry sauce, or greek tzatziki sauce are all wonderful.
