Rustic and delicious Broas de São Martinho are a portuguese traditional, quick, and easy cookie infused with spices and nuts.

Ingredients

  • Flour – 300gr
  • Baking Powder – 1 Teaspoon
  • Brown Sugar – 150gr
  • Butter – 125gr
  • Egg – 1 (Beaten)
  • Cinnamon – 1 Teaspoon
  • Fennel – 1 Teaspoon
  • Walnuts – 80gr (Chopped)
  • Raisins – 100gr (Seedless)
  • Salt – A Pinch

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, brown sugar, powdered cinnamon, and fennel (crush the seeds if whole) and mix thoroughly.
  2. Add the melted butter, beaten egg, and a pinch of salt. Mix and knead the ingredients with your hands until a dough ball is formed. Sprinkle a bit of the flour over it, cover with a cloth, and let it rest for about 30 minutes.
  3. Chop the nuts, prepare a baking tray lined with non-stick paper, and preheat the oven to 180ºC.
  4. Retrieve the dough, add the nuts and raisins, and knead it thoroughly.
  5. Shape the dough into small rolls, balls or even 2-3 larger rolls, making sure they’re all of similar size to ensure even baking. Place them on the tray.
  6. Bake at 180ºC for about 13-14 minutes until they achieve a beautiful golden color. Remove from the oven, let them cool, and they’re ready to enjoy! Bon appétit and Happy Saint Martins Day!
Notes: Try adding a dash of orange zest for a citrusy twist or swap the raisins for dried cranberries to experiment with different flavors. You can even dip the cookies in melted chocolate for an extra decadent touch! Also, if you’re short on time, prepare the dough in advance and refrigerate it, making it a breeze to have fresh, warm cookies at any moment!
