Portuguese Easy Spiced Apple Jam

Ah, the simple pleasures! This recipe is a back-to-basics rustic apple puree or jam with a hint of very common portuguese spices. You can certainly use this (as I do) to enrich yogurts, or maybe explore filling pastries, pies, or even as cake filling. And guess what? It’s also perfect for the little ones.

A noteworthy point: this recipe barely uses sugar, so once done, you’ll want to store it in an airtight container in the fridge. Without the sugar, it’s best consumed within a couple of days to avoid spoilage, thats why in my opinion its a bit between a cooked puree and a jam, a jam would have more sugar to keep it shel stable for longer.

Also of course the “art” of making apple puree isn’t something unique to Portugal. In places where apples are grown, someone’s for sure concocting a delicious apple treat! I’d say what gives it a Portuguese touch is the use of spices that give that extra delicious oomph. Shall we try easy peasy recipe?

You have to try this pretty Rustic Portuguese Spiced Apple Puree, perfect alone or as a sweet jam for bread or other sweets.

  • Apple – 4
  • Lemon – 1 Teaspoon (Small, Juice)
  • Brown Sugar – 1 Teaspoon (Optional)
  • Cinnamon – A Pinch
  • Nutmeg – A Pinch
  • Cumin – A Pinch

  1. Peel and chop the apples into tiny cubes, almost minced. Add a teaspoon of lemon juice, a pinch each of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cumin. If the apples aren’t particularly sweet, add a teaspoon of sugar.
  2. Take this delightful mix to a pan over medium heat for about 10 minutes, ensuring the apples become tender. Gradually mash the fruit to achieve a slightly pureed texture.
  3. Taste to ensure tenderness and adjust sweetness by adding more sugar if needed. Store in an airtight container. Enjoy directly or serve with yogurt or ice cream. Bon appétit!
Notes: For a sugar-free option, this makes a wonderful treat for children starting from 10-12 months old, just don’t add the spices or added sugar. Keep an eye while cooking; there’s no need to caramelize the apples, just cook until they’re tender.
