Ah, the lovely pumpkin spice mix! So before you ask, no, there’s no actual pumpkin in it. I know, I know, it’s a little confusing! Pumpkin Spice (or Pumpkin Pie Spice, as some folks call it) is actually a spice blend, kind of like curry powder or garam masala, made from a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, cloves, and allspice. It became known as “pumpkin” spice because it was the classic base of spices used in traditional American pumpkin pie, and the name just kind of… stuck.
These days, the confusion runs deep. You’ll see “pumpkin flavor” on all kinds of products and it could mean one of three things: it actually tastes like pumpkin, it’s flavored with the spice blend that pairs with pumpkin (but has zero pumpkin taste), or, the best option, it’s both! That famous Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Latte? That’s actually a combo of real pumpkin aroma and the spice blend together. So yeah, the name does a lot of heavy lifting out there in the world.
Like i said above, This is a classic American spice mix that you can absolutely make at home, it’s really not that complicated, and the result is genuinely delicious. Way better than the dusty jar you’d grab off a grocery shelf, and you can tweak the ratios to your own taste once you get the hang of it. Let’s do this!
How to Make Pumpkin Spice Mix from Scratch

Okay so this is possibly the easiest recipe on the entire internet. Like, embarrassingly easy. But don't let that fool you , the result is pure magic in a jar!
Ingredients
- Cinnamon – 90g
- Nutmeg – 20g
- Ginger Powder – 20g
- Cloves – 15g
- Allspice – 15g
Directions
- Just weight and mix everything together and that’s it, a recipe without any problems ;D
- In this case, since I didn’t have allspice powder already, I crushed it with my mortar and pestle, and then poured it through a small sieve with a very fine mesh, just to get a super fine powder and of course mix everything together.
- Store your pumpkin spice mix like any other spice in an airtight jar or container and that’s it, enjoy!

The quantities listed here are pretty generous and will give you a solid stash. If you only need enough for a couple of baked goods, just cut everything in half (or even in quarters) , no need to make a massive batch unless you’re planning a serious autumn baking spree.
Since cinnamon makes up the bulk of this blend, the quality of your cinnamon really matters. Ceylon cinnamon tends to be sweeter and more delicate, while Cassia cinnamon (the more common grocery store kind) is bolder and spicier. Either works great, but Ceylon will give you a slightly more refined, bakery-style result.
