There’s nothing quite like having fresh vegetables and fruits at home, but we don’t always have the time or budget to constantly run to the grocery store for more. The good news? Some fruits and vegetables last much longer than others, especially when stored properly. Here are some of my favorite in no particular order!

12 Long Lasting Fruits and Vegetables

1. Potatoes
Potatoes are perfect for stocking up at home. When stored under ideal conditions, they’ll easily last 4 months or even longer. The trick is to keep them in a cool, dark place away from light and away from other produce like apples or onions (both of which emit gases that speed up the ripening process).

2. Onions
Onions are incredibly easy to store. Under ideal conditions, dark, dry, and cool temperatures around 5°C (40°F) they can last 2 to 3 months. Under normal household conditions, just keep them away from other fruits and they’ll last about a month without any problems.

3. Garlic
Garlic lasts 3 to 5 months when stored as whole bulbs in a dark place with slight humidity. However, if it gets too much moisture, it will start to sprout, as a good tip when they sprout take the green bit out and just dice the white part.

4. Beets
Beets can last anywhere from 2 to 4 months in the refrigerator without any issues. Cut off the greens and store them in plastic bags with a few sheets of kichen paper to absorb moisture.

5. Cabbage
Best eaten fresh, but cabbage can last up to 2 months when wrapped in plastic and some kitchen paper to absorb excess moisture in the refrigerator.

6. Carrots
Carrots keep well in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. The secret is keeping them fresh without excess moisture, so store them with kitchen paper to prevent rotting.

7. Celery Root (Celeriac)
The root especially (since the greens don’t last as long), also known as celeriac, can be stored just like carrots. Wrap it well in plastic with kitchen paper and it’ll keep for a couple of weeks.

8. Radishes
Radishes hold up well, especially daikon type radishes (long and white). Store them in the refrigerator in plastic bags with kitchen paper, and they’ll last up to a month.

9. Squash and Pumpkins
All types of winter squash and pumpkins store remarkably well. As long as they’re kept away from direct sunlight with good air circulation in a dry area, they’ll last anywhere from 2 to 6 months.

10. Turnips
Like the various vegetables mentioned above, turnips should be stored in bags with kitchen paper. They’ll last about a month without any problems.

11. Apples
Apples should be kept away from other vegetables, but if stored at cool temperatures around 4ºC (39-41°F) inside a plastic bag, they’ll last a couple of weeks easily. Start by eating the larger apples first, since those tend to spoil more quickly.

12. Oranges, Lemons, and Limes
Oranges ripen and last well for about a week at room temperature, but when stored in the refrigerator, they’ll keep for 2 to 3 weeks without any issues.

Quick Tip: You can always freeze! Especially vegetables or fruits that don’t last as long, which you can then use later for soups, smoothies or baked goods. You can also preserve produce in vinegar, olive oil, or sugar as another way to extend their life.

And that’s it, hope this was helpful and see you later! ;D
