These puff pastry rolls are a super alternative to the more regular puff pastry filled snacks, perfect for a party where you want something a bit more jazzy. I made these for a Christmas type lunch (a few days before Christmas), and they couldn’t have been easier! If you’re after quick puff pastries for a celebration, this is your recipe. I used mozzarella cheese and coppa nostrana, which is a cured meat from the Parma region of Italy. It’s somewhere between ham and prosciutto, and that makes all the difference in these kinds of pastries. Typically, ham or something with a bit more moisture cooks better than prosciutto, which can quickly become too dry.

Mozzarella is great for gratin, but it doesn’t have much flavor on its own, so the Parmesan is really important to give it more punch. If you don’t have those exact ingredients, any cheese that melts well will work perfectly. You can also season it stronger and spicier if it’s just for adults. I left it with just the cheesy gratin on top, but you can add even more spices on top, you can literally make it your own. Choose a different blend of cheeses, choose a different ham (smoked ham or honey roasted ham yummm). The world is your oyster or should I say your roll! 😀 Let’s check the recipe!

Gotta say these are a delicious snack, and i really liked how easy they are to assemble, you dont have to cut and fill each pastry, you just make a roll, cut, season and its ready to go! Easy Peasy!

Ingredients

  • Puff Pastry – 1 roll (Rectangular)
  • Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese – 2 Balls (+/- 250g)
  • Coppa Nostrana Ham – 6 Slices (Or Any Cured Ham)
  • Red Onion Pickles – To Taste
  • Egg – 1 L
  • Parmesan Cheese – To Taste

Directions

  1. Roll out the puff pastry and preheat the oven to 200°C (400°F) or as recommended on the puff pastry packaging.
  2. Spread pieces of mozzarella cheese over the dough. If you want to arrange them perfectly, cut the cheese into strips of the same size.
  3. Place the slices of coppa nostrana on 2/3 of the dough and the pickled onions on the rest. If you don’t have pickled onions you can make your own 🙂 you can also just make some caramelized onions. Sprinkle everything generously with grated Parmesan cheese.
  4. Roll up the dough from the long side, then cut into slices about 2 fingers wide. Arrange the slices sideways on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Whisk the egg and brush each pastry generously with the egg and sprinkle with more freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Bake for about 20 minutes until the dough is golden brown and the top is nicely browned.
  6. That’s it, remove from the oven and it’s ready to serve. Bon appétit!
Notes & Tips: You can make these puff pastries with any filling you like, just be careful not to put too much in them. Also, don’t make them too big, because there’s dough on the inside and you risk the interior dough not cooking through.

These rolls are fantastic served warm, but they’re also great at room temperature, making them perfect for buffets and parties. If you’re making them ahead, you can assemble them, refrigerate for up to 24 hours, and bake just before serving (just bake them for a little longer).

Variation Suggestions:

  • Use prosciutto or another cured ham instead of coppa nostrana;
  • Try cheddar or gruyère instead of mozzarella for a sharper flavor;
  • Add a thin layer of pesto or sun-dried tomato paste before rolling;
  • Sprinkle with sesame seeds or everything bagel seasoning before baking;
  • Make a vegetarian version with roasted peppers and feta.
