Sweet potatoes are seriously an excellent alternative to regular potatoes, ok they might not get quite as crispy but you can still make sweet potato chips or crisps in half the time, seriously, unlike regular potatoes, you can even make a sweet potato in an instant in the microwave! 😀

It’s the same deal in the oven, making roasted potatoes usually takes about 60 minutes, but the time to make roasted sweet potatoes is practically less than half that, around 30 minutes and that’s if they’re big chunks, sliced thin like this they’re done in a flash, like 10 to 15 minutes tops, actually it’s a good idea to keep an eye on the oven just to get them perfect.

Just so you know if you’re not familiar with them, sweet potatoes are a tuber vegetable, super rich in nutrients, kind of like regular potatoes just with fewer carbs and a bit more sugar and fiber that can be prepared in all sorts of ways just like potatoes, I’d say potatoes are more versatile and better fried, but for roasting and boiling, sweet potatoes are just as good or better than regular potatoes.

This recipe ends up being super simple, but I’d say you can always take advantage and season the sweet potatoes heavily, a bit of oregano, thyme, paprika, turmeric or pepper and you’ll create some fantastic spiced crisps, its a bit to your taste, let’s check the recipe!

Hehehehe... Oh boy, nothing beats some crispy sweet potato chips baked in the oven, this is hands down the best way to get that satisfying crunch with way fewer calories than those packaged sweet potato fries! 🙂

Ingredients

  • Sweet Potato – 1 Large
  • Olive Oil – A Few Drops
  • Salt – A Pinch

Directions

  1. You can make this recipe with or without the peel. I would say that if you are going to cut it into large cubes, halves, or whole pieces, it is best to peel it. If you are going to cut it into thin slices or sticks, then you can leave the skin on (mainly because sweet potato skin tends to be thicker and has a more fibrous texture). Start by washing the sweet potato thoroughly, using a small brush if necessary to clean the skin well.
  2. Use a mandolin or a very sharp knife to finely slice the sweet potato and place the slices in a bowl of cold water.
  3. Preheat the oven to 200ºC and line a baking tray with non-stick paper.
  4. Drain and dry the potatoes on kitchen paper or a kitchen towel.
  5. Arrange the sweet potato slices on the baking tray, making sure they are all separated and not overlapping.
  6. Drizzle with olive oil (or if you have like a spray bottle for oil, that’s even better) and a pinch of salt and bake for about 10 to 15 minutes.
  7. After about 8 minutes, open the oven, turn the potatoes over, and return to the oven until they are golden brown. That’s it, ready to serve. Bon appétit!
Notes: The mandoline is your best friend here for getting consistently thin slices, the thinner and more uniform they are, the crispier and more evenly they’ll cook.

Spray bottles for oil are more common nowadays since it’s the best way to oil something to use on an air fryer.

Don’t skip the cold water soak! This helps remove excess starch and makes the chips extra crispy.

Resist the temptation to overcrowd the baking sheet. Sweet potatoes need space for the hot air to circulate, otherwise they’ll steam instead of crisp up.

If some chips cook faster than others (edges versus center of the tray), just remove the done ones and let the rest keep going for another minute or two.

These are best eaten fresh from the oven while they’re at peak crispiness, but if you have leftovers you can re-crisp them in a 180°C (350°F) oven for a few minutes.

Feel free to get creative with seasonings! Try smoked paprika, garlic powder, cinnamon and a tiny bit of brown sugar for sweet chips, or go spicy with cayenne pepper and cumin.

Orange-fleshed sweet potatoes tend to be sweeter and creamier, while white or purple varieties are a bit drier and starchier, both work great for chips but will have slightly different textures.
