I want to start by apologizing hehehe! Sometimes I get this urge to make something a little different, and it’s not because I have leftovers and don’t know what to do with them, no, I think it’s something more primal, something more brilliant!
So why not make a pizza with hot dog buns!?!?! Am i a genius? Or just “special”! ;D I know what you’re thinking, is it actually good? Am I blazing yet another culinary trail here, and the honest answer is clearly a maybe…
Its soft fluffy bread with a little tomato sauce, salami and a bunch of mozzarella cheese, it’s not going to be bad, this isn’t pizza but its still pretty good sandwich of sorts, that you can make on any sandwich press, nooooo problemo! Let’s get to it!
Toasted Pizza Hot Dogs with Mozzarella and Salami

For those days when you look in the pantry and think, yep i can't make food with this, or can I? This is the recipe for you! Can we even call this a recipe?!?!?
Ingredients
- Hot Dog Buns – 2
- Tomato Pulp – 4 Tablespoons
- Mozzarella Cheese – 160g
- Salami – 8 Slices
- Oregano – A Pinch
- Straw Fries – To Serve (Optional)
Directions
- Heat a toaster oven lined with parchment paper.
- Open the hot dog bun and spread some tomato pulp (note that you don’t need too much or it will get soggy; it’s about the same amount as spreading butter).
- Add the mozzarella cheese, followed by chopped salami and a pinch of dried oregano.
- Close the toaster oven and toast until the cheese melts and the bun is toasted. Ready to serve with some straw fries… why not?! Repeat for the other bun! Enjoy!

I honestly don’t remember if I used tomato pulp or leftovers of a chunkier tomato sauce, but either works just fine, tomato pulp gives you a fresher flavor, while a thicker tomato sauce makes it a bit richer and sweeter.
If you don’t have a sandwich/toaster press, cook it low and slow in a covered skillet to melt the cheese, then flip it over to crisp up that cheesy side too.
Like with any pizza, or sandwich for that matter, feel free to throw on whatever you like. Fresh toppings go on at the end, anything that’s better toasted or broiled goes on at the start.
Don’t skip lining the sandwich press with baking paper, melted mozzarella loves to stick to hot metal and you’ll lose half your cheese to the machine.
Also, slice or shred the mozzarella rather than using thick chunks, it melts faster and more evenly that way, which matters since you’re working with a much shorter cook time than an actual pizza.
If your buns are a day or two old, even better, slightly firmer bread holds up better to the sauce without going too limp.
You don’t have to stop at hot dog buns. Try it with any kind of bread you have on hand, or go all in and tuck a cooked sausage inside for the ultimate pizza hot dog fusion! ;D
