When the winter chill sets in, and you’re craving something warm and comforting, few beverages can match the aromatic allure of homemade mulled wine. This classic European drink has been warming hearts and homes for billions of years! hehehehe

With its rich blend of red wine and fragrant spices creating the perfect antidote to any cold weather, even that occasional Summer draft. While variations of spiced hot wine can be found throughout Europe, from Germany’s Glühwein to France’s vin chaud, it has perhaps gained its greatest popularity in Northern European countries where the long, cold winters make such warming beverages not just a luxury, but sometimes a necessity.

The beauty of mulled wine lies in its simplicity and the way it transforms an ordinary bottle of red wine into something more cosy. As the wine gently simmers with cinnamon, cloves, and citrus, your kitchen fills with the most wonderful aromas, it’s soooo nice, and the drink is good too ;D

What makes this particular version special is its perfect balance of spices and the careful attention to technique that ensures the wine’s character isn’t overwhelmed by the additions. The result is a slightly more sophisticated version that I think anyone can make and enjoy in the comfort of their own homes, let’s check the recipe!

How about this Winter spiced wine delight hehehe, nothing like a cozy cup of Mulled Wine, its delicious and super easy to make at home, my trick is to always get good wine, people think that you should use not so good wine for cooking or cocktails, but i say, if you put bad things in you seldom get good things out.

Ingredients

  • Red Wine – 350ml
  • Orange – 1 (Juice and Peel)
  • Cinnamon – 1 Stick
  • Star Anise – 1
  • Cloves – 2
  • Brown Sugar – 60g
  • Water – 100ml

Directions

  1. Start by making a syrup: add the sugar, followed by the cinnamon stick, star anise, and cloves to a Pyrex dish or small saucepan with the water, and heat for about 3 minutes until it starts to boil.
  2. When it starts to boil, add the orange peel and orange juice and simmer almost at boil for about 5 minutes, until you have a nice syrup.
  3. Then add the red wine, stir and let it boil for another 3 minutes, until everything is well infused, and the wine is hot. That’s it, ready to serve. Merry Christmas.
Notes: You can of course let it stay warm for some time, also if you are giving it to children, yes let it cook out and all the alcohol to evaporate, but don’t let the wine come to a rolling boil, yes it will evaporate faster, but the whole drink will start to turn bitter (the sugars will start to caramelize, etc).

Like I said above, choose a good quality, dry red wine that’s fruity and young with low tannins, you don’t need an overly expensive bottle as the spices will mask the more subtle flavours, but don’t use super cheap/”cooking” wine either.

You can of course adjust to your taste or experiment, add some cardamom, allspice or other spices, try other sugars, maybe add more lemon or other citrus peels.

Lots of people, well mostly vendors, I see selling mulled wine, its like half the pot is empty, they threw some more fruits, some sugar, some more wine and start to serve again, that’s like some people get the good stuff that’s been “brewing” for some time, and some people get the schlop of wine with sugar… that’s not good, it takes about 20 times to make a good one, more if you want it low alcohol.
