You know how it is when you have bigger eyes than your stomach and end up buying way too many pears! But honestly, having extra fruit is never really a problem, if I wasn’t making this jam, I’d use them as filling for a tart or some other dessert. When I’m not feeling particularly creative, though, making a preserve like this always works perfectly. The only real work involved is the sterilizing part, because otherwise it’s incredibly simple to make.
This rustic Portuguese pear preserve is an amazing way to use up leftover fruit or when you’ve got too much gorgeous seasonal pears on hand. It’s absolutely perfect as a complement to morning porridge or stirred into yogurt, works beautifully as cake filling, and makes an elegant topping for vanilla or any kind of ice cream. The beauty of this recipe is its simplicity, you can whip it up in about 20 minutes and have something truly delicious. For this batch, I decided to cut the pears into small cubes instead of the traditional halves, and added just a pinch of cinnamon for warmth. Since the fruit is diced small, everything cooks in an instant.
Keep in mind that you can make this to enjoy within a week and simply store it in the refrigerator, but if you want to preserve it for months, you’ll need to properly sterilize your jars and follow the sealing process correctly. Either way, you’ll have a gorgeous, homemade preserve that tastes infinitely better than anything store-bought. Let’s check the recipe!
Rustic Portuguese Cinnamon Pear Preserve • Easy 20-Minute Recipe

Have a ton of pears and you dont know what todo with them! Then this is the recipe for you... just make a delicious pear preserve.
Ingredients
- Pears – 6
- Lemon – 1 Tablespoon of Juice
- Water – 300ml
- Sugar – 200g
- Cinnamon – A Pinch
Directions
- If you are going to make a long term preserve, start by sterilizing a jar or two in boiling water. You can find more detailed instructions on sterilization down bellow on the notes ;D
- Next, start by peeling the pears, removing the cores, and cutting them into small cubes, try and make them all about the same size so they will cook equaly. Repeat until you have no more pears, then drizzle everything with a little lemon juice.
- Then, in a saucepan, add the water and sugar and bring to a boil. Add the pears and a pinch of cinnamon and cook for about 6 minutes. Since the fruit is small, it will cook quickly.
- Finally, pour the contents into the jars, close them tightly, and place them upside down in a pot of very hot water. Leave them there until the water cools down. This will complete the process of pasteurizing and sealing the jars, so the preserves will last much longer.
- And that’s it! If, like me, you are going to consume it in the next few days, you can skip the sterilization step and just store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator. The preserve will last for about a week stored this way, and that’s it! Enjoy!

Cutting the pears into small, uniform cubes ensures even cooking and a lovely chunky texture that’s perfect for spooning over desserts.
Feel free to experiment with other warm spices, like a tiny pinch of nutmeg or cardamom, but remember that a little goes a long way.
Taste your pears first – if they’re very sweet, you might want to reduce the sugar slightly. If they’re quite tart, you might prefer a bit more.
