There’s something absolutely magical about fresh waffles, and this American style recipe delivers exactly what you’re craving, these are some waffles that are tender and fluffy in the middle with perfectly crispy, golden edges. If you don’t have a waffle maker, no worries you can always use a stovetop waffle pan that works similarly on the stove, or just make them like pancakes or crepes instead, the batter is pretty much the same anyway, it will lack all the crispy edges but it will still be tender and delicious.
This is a great waffle recipe that’s much more simple and plain than the slightly more complex yeasted dough from a Belgian waffle! For those classic Belgian waffles, I’d need to hunt down pearl sugar, which is a more granulated sugar similar to coarse sugar, and the Belgian waffle batter uses a slower rising yeast dough with biological yeast. This American recipe is simpler and faster, more like a mix between pancake and cupcake so let’s get to it!
Ohhh ohhh and i dont need to tell you, these are delicious plain, but also good with extra sugar, slather them with butter, top with jam or preserves, maybe some ice cream, drizzle with honey, pile on fresh fruit, it’s pretty however you like them heheheh…
Classic & Crispy Homemade American Style Waffles

Yay waffles! Nothing like borrowing my sister's waffle maker and off I went, these beauties are soft in the middle and crispy at the edges, perfect for a Sunday epic breakfast!
Ingredients
- Flour – 100g
- Cornstarch – 30g (Cornflour)
- Baking Powder – 1/2 Teaspoon
- Baking Soda – 1/4 Teaspoon
- Salt – A Pinch
- Sugar – 1 Tablespoon
- Milk – 235ml
- Oil – 80ml (Used Sunflower)
- Egg – 1
- Vanilla – 1 Teaspoon (Extract)
- Butter – To Taste
- Jam – To Taste (Used Strawberry)
- Sugar – To Taste
- Fruit – To Taste
Directions
- Start by combining the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and a pinch of salt in a bowl and mix.
- In a small jug or bowl, combine the milk, vegetable oil (i used sunflower oil, but any neutral cooking oil will do), egg, and vanilla extract, and whisk well.
- Pour the liquid mixture into the flour mixture, mix again well, and set aside for 15 minutes to rest so the mixture can relax and hidrate properly.
- Then heat up the waffle iron.
- When it is hot, grease it with a little melted butter, pour in spoonfuls of the batter, and close the mold or machine.
- The batter will rise and swell, sometimes spilling over the edges a little. Cook until golden brown, remove, grease again and make another one. Repeat until you have no more batter.
- Serve plain or sprinkled with sugar, with butter, jam or honey, with fruit, however you like it. Bon appétit!





Make sure your waffle maker is fully heated before adding batter. A properly heated surface creates that crispy exterior we all love.
Even with a non stick waffle maker, a light brush of melted butter between each waffle ensures easy release and adds extra flavor to those crispy edges.
Start with less batter than you think you need. You can always add more, but overflow creates a mess and makes it harder to get clean edges, this way on the second batch you know the perfect amout!
The cornstarch in this recipe is what gives these waffles their signature crispy texture. Don’t substitute it with more flour!
You can make the dry mixture ahead of time and store it in an airtight container. When you’re ready to make waffles, just add the wet ingredients.
These waffles freeze beautifully! Let them cool completely, then freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once frozen, transfer to a freezer bag. Reheat in a toaster for quick weekday breakfasts.
Fold in chocolate chips, blueberries, or chopped nuts into the batter for variety. You can also add a bit of cinnamon or nutmeg to the dry ingredients for extra warmth.
