Nothing like a big pile of crispy cute cookies to liven up the day! ;D These are pretty traditional Portuguese cookies from the Valongo region of Portugal. They are a delicious crispy cinnamon cookie very popular during Easter, these are made with simple ingredients, but that is common of Portuguese cookies, in this case they are also twisted with a golden color from a bit of egg yolk.
These are some delicious cookies and one of my favorite recipes, just shows that you don’t need sandwich cookies with weird creams to make a real treat, these go great with tea or even a cute gift.
You can adjust the size of the cookies, make them longer, shorter, a bit thicker, for about the normal size this recipe will give you around 22 cookies (about 16gr and about 10 cm long each), but of course you can adjust to your taste, lets check the recipe!
Portuguese Twisted Biscuits Recipe
Portuguese Twisted Biscuits

These twisted biscuits are a treat to bake at home, easy to make, very crispy and sure to satisfy ;D
Ingredients
- Flour – 200 gr (Without Yeast, Unleavened)
- Sugar – 100 gr
- Unsalted Butter – 75 gr (At Room Temperature)
- Instant Yeast – 1/2 tsp
- Egg – 1
- Egg Yolks – 2 (One For Brushing at the End)
- Cinnamon – 1 tsp
- Salt – A Pinch
Directions
- Pour all ingredients into a bowl (except 1 of the egg yolks), mix and knead until you get a ball of dough.
- Cover the ball with cling film and put in the fridge for about 30 minutes just to set the dough.
- Remove pieces of dough (the ideal is to weigh +/- each piece so you get all equal cookies), I used about 15gr to 20gr choose a measure you like and repeat.
- Shape each piece of dough into a roll about 10cm long, then roll it out as you see in the pictures with one side with a loop and the rest rolled together, you may need to flour the countertop a little, every 3 minutes the butter started to make the dough sticky, so flour it a little to make it easier to shape the cookies but don’t overdo it.
- Arrange the cookies on a baking tray lined with non-stick paper.
- Preheat the oven to 180°C.
- When you have all the cookies molded, beat the one egg yolk and brush each cookie.
- Finally take it to the oven to bake, they should be ready in 10 to 15 minutes, in my case it was all 15 minutes, it will depend on your oven and how thick your biscuits are, so just keep an eye on it.
- And when they are golden take them out, these will be a bit soft while warm, but will become crispy when cooled, store them at room temperature in a air tight box, enjoy!
