Also known as Boozy pears, a delightful treat and perfect for everyone – from the grown-ups to the little ones. When you cook fruits in wine, all the alcohol evaporates, leaving behind just the fantastic flavor and the softened texture. You can make these beauties easy peasy, adding a dash of honey for that extra something or switching the sugar for brown sugar.
Choose different wines to create unique flavors or elevate it with a splash of Port wine to jazz it up. I had a whole bag of small pears, which cooked faster than normal sized pears. However, if you’re using normal or larger pears, adjust the cooking time to get them just right. Test their tenderness as you would with potatoes – a knife should slide in smoothly when they’re done, let’s check the recipe!
Portuguese Poached Pears in Red Wine • Pêras Bêbadas

Portuguese Boozy Pears a delightful simple and delicious recipe, perfect to warm those cold nights!
Ingredients
- Pears – 5 (Small)
- Red Wine – 250ml
- Water – 80ml
- Sugar – 2 Heaping Tablespoons
- Cinnamon – 1 Stick
- Lemon – 1 Tablespoon (Juice)
Directions
- Peel the pears and coat them with lemon juice to prevent browning.
- Trim the base of each pear, allowing them to stand easily.
- Place them in a wide pan, add the red wine, water, sugar, and cinnamon. Cook covered on medium heat for about 20 minutes.
- Occasionally turn the pears for even cooking.
- Once tender, adjust the sauce’s sweetness to your preference. If the sauce is too liquid or wine-flavored, remove the pears and reduce the sauce further – you want it a bit runny, not caramelized.
- Serve warm or chill; they can be stored in the fridge for a couple of days.
